Brief Overview
Etsy is an international marketplace for handmade, vintage, and craft supplies, where Ukrainian sellers can reach a global audience and sell in dollars. To get started, it is important to choose the right niche, set up the shop, create strong listings, and immediately lay the foundation for SEO, shipping, and service.
The essence of this article: a beginner can start selling on Etsy from Ukraine by following several steps: registration, market research, listing setup, high-quality photos, promotion, review management, analytics, and a proper payout model.
The Core in One Block
Main idea: success on Etsy for a beginner depends not on a “magical niche,” but on the combination of four factors: the right product, a strong listing, good photos, and consistent service. It is these that help the shop gain visibility, conversions, and repeat sales.

What is Etsy and why is it a gold mine for Ukrainian sellers
Etsy is an international trading platform specializing in unique handmade products, vintage items, and craft materials. The Etsy website was founded in 2005, and today it connects over 95 million active buyers and 7.5 million sellers worldwide. In 2023, the total sales volume on the platform amounted to $13.2 billion—and this number continues to grow.
When clients come to me with the question “What is Etsy?”, I always explain: imagine a global fair of artisans where buyers from around the world are searching for exactly what they can’t find in regular stores. The Etsy site is a place where individuality, quality, and the story behind each product are valued.
Why Etsy is Perfect for Ukrainian Sellers
Over the years working at Western Bid, I have identified several key advantages of the Etsy platform specifically for our fellow countrymen:
- Low entry threshold – to start on the Etsy site, you only need $0.20 per listing (product card)
- Global audience – 70% of buyers are from the USA, where the average check is 3-4 times higher than in Ukraine
- Support for handmade – Ukrainian craftspeople are traditionally strong in crafts and folk arts
- Simple logistics – products can be shipped through Western Bid from the nearest Nova Poshta branch
- Payment in dollars – protection against exchange rate fluctuations
Recently, one of our clients, Oksana from Lviv, started selling embroidered shirts on Etsy store. In the first 3 months, she reached a income of $2,500 per month. “I didn’t believe that
Etsy shop could generate that kind of money,” she says. “Mykhailo and the Western Bid team showed me how to properly set up listings and optimize SEO.”How do Etsy algorithms work in 2025
Before discussing how to sell on Etsy, it is important to understand how the platform works internally. In 2024-2025, Etsy introduced several significant changes to its algorithms that directly affect the visibility of your Etsy shop.
Key Factors for Etsy Ranking
Based on Western Bid’s experience and analysis of over 1000 listings from our clients, the main success factors can be outlined as follows:
1. Customer Service Quality (Customer Experience Score)
Etsy now considers:
- Response speed to messages (ideally within 1 hour)
- Percentage of positive reviews (at least 95%)
- Timely shipping (within 1-3 days)
- Clear return policy
Our client Andriy, who sells wooden toys, increased his visibility on his Etsy shop by 40% simply by improving response time from 24 hours to 2 hours.
2. Image Quality – New Standard 2025
If previously you could upload medium-quality photos on etsy.com shop, now the requirements have tightened:
- Minimum resolution of 2000×2000 pixels
- Obligatory photos of the product in use
- At least 5 photos per listing (we recommend 10)
- Video presentation (increases conversion by 25%)
3. SEO Optimization for Etsy Search
Here, my experience as an SEO specialist has been particularly useful. How to sell successfully on etsy from Ukraine? Start with proper optimization:
- Use all 13 available tags
Example for a Ukrainian embroidered shirt store:- ukrainian vyshyvanka – main tag
- embroidered linen shirt – descriptive tag
- traditional ukraine clothing – cultural context
- mens ethnic shirt – target audience
- slavic folk costume – expanded niche
- white embroidered tunic – color + style
- рWedding guest attire for men – specific occasion
- handmade linen clothing – material + manufacturing method
- boho men’s shirt – style trend
- festival clothing men – alternative use
- sustainable fashion – eco trend
- fathers day gift ukraine – gift category
- custom embroidery shirt – personalization
Important: Use different combinations of words, avoid repetition. Each tag should attract a new audience.
- Include long-tail keywords
Instead of short tags, use long phrases:
❌ Poor (short tags):
- jewelry
- necklace
- gift
- handmade
✅ Good (long-tail tags):
- minimalist gold necklace for women
- personalized birthstone necklace mom
- dainty layering necklace set
- 14k gold filled chain 18 inch
Example for wooden toys:
- Instead of “wooden toy” → “montessori wooden stacking toy 1 year old”
- Instead of “baby gift” → “organic baby shower gift gender neutral”
- Instead of “educational toy” → “waldorf inspired learning toys toddlers”
Update your listings every 30-60 days
Schedule for a ceramics shop:
Month 1 (January):
- Replace photo №3 with a new angle
- Add to description: “Perfect for your 2025 home refresh”
- Update tag: → “valentine coffee mug set”
Month 2 (February):
- Add a video of the creation process
- Change the order of photos
- Update the title: add “Spring Collection”
- Replace 2-3 tags with relevant ones: “easter table decor”, “spring home refresh”
Month 3 (March):
- Update the main photo with a spring composition
- Add a “Customer Reviews” section to the description
- Change the price (even by $1) to influence the algorithm
- New tags: “mothers day gift from daughter”
Tip: Keep an update calendar. Even minimal changes “wake up” Etsy’s algorithm.
- Include seasonal keywords
Example of an annual plan for a candle shop:
🎄 Winter (December-February):
- christmas candle gift set
- winter home fragrance
- cozy hygge candles
- new year aromatherapy
- valentine day candle
🌸 Spring (March-May):
- spring scented candles
- easter table centerpiece
- mothers day spa gift
- graduation gift 2026
- spring cleaning natural
☀Summer (June-August):
- summer citrus candles
- outdoor patio candles
- beach house decor
- wedding favor candles
- teacher appreciation gift
🍂 Autumn (September-November):
- fall scented candles
- pumpkin spice candle
- halloween decor candles
- thanksgiving centerpiece
- black friday deal candle
4. Search Visibility Tool
The new feature launched by Etsy in 2024 allows you to track the effectiveness of each listing. At Western Bid, we teach clients to use this data for continual improvement of rankings.
Step-by-step guide: how to sell on Etsy from Ukraine
Now let’s move on to practice. I will tell you how to register on Etsy from Ukraine and launch your first sales.
Step 1: Registration on Etsy Ukraine
Etsy registration for Ukrainians has its own features. Here’s a detailed instruction:
- Prepare documents:
- Valid passport or ID card
- Bank card for verification
- Phone number (preferably capable of receiving SMS)
- Registration process on etsy Ukraine:
- Create a new account in Payoneer
- Go to etsy.com and click “Sign in”
- Select “Register”
- Use real data (this is important for verification)
- Confirm email
- Payment setup:
- Etsy for Ukraine requires having a Payoneer account
- Link your Payoneer account to your Etsy account
- Verification takes 3-5 days
Important: After the events of 2022, many ask “when will Etsy open for Ukraine?” My answer: the platform never closed! It was only temporarily forbidden to register new stores from Ukraine, but now registration is open again. Also, withdrawal methods have changed. At Western Bid, we assist you at every stage – from registration to transferiments.
Step 2: Market Research & Niche Selection
Before you start selling on Etsy from Ukraine, conduct an analysis:
- Study competitors
- Find 10-20 successful stores in your niche
- Analyze their prices, descriptions, photos
- Pay attention to sales volume
- Define your unique offer
- What distinguishes your product?
- What problem does it solve?
- Why will a customer choose exactly you?
Example from Western Bid practice: client Marina wanted to sell regular candles. We helped her find a narrow niche – candles with Ukrainian herbs and essential oils. Result: $5,000 in sales in the first month.
Step 3: Creating and Optimizing Listings
This is a critically important stage for success on Etsy. Here’s my verified checklist:
Create a selling title
The formula for an ideal Etsy title is: [Main Keyword] + [Description] + [Material] + [Application] + [Additional Features]
Example: “Handmade Wooden Jewelry Box | Ukrainian Oak Storage Organizer | Personalized Gift for Her | Wedding Anniversary Present”
Writing a conversion-focused description
Structure used at Western Bid:
- First paragraph– emotional hook “Imagine the moment she opens this box…”
- Key benefits(bullets)
- ✓ Natural Ukrainian oak
- ✓ Handmade by a master with 10 years of experience
- ✓ Personalization included in the price
- Details and dimensions – exact measurements, weight, materials
- Care instructions – how to keep the product in perfect condition
- Delivery information – terms, methods, tracking
- Call to action “Questions remaining? Contact me!”
Step 4: Photos that sell
After years of working at Western Bid, I’ve realized: photos determine 70% of success on Etsy. Here’s my set of rules:
- Main photo– clean white background, product occupies 80% of the frame
- Lifestyle photo– product in use
- Details– close-ups of textures, seams, fasteners
- Size– product next to an item for scale
- Packaging– show how the product arrives
- Creation process– photos of you at work (builds trust)
- Infographics– sizes, features, benefits
- Variants– all available colors/sizes
- Personalization– examples with names/dates
- Video– 15-second product overview
Comparison of effective and ineffective listings: real-life examples from Western Bid practice
It can be confidently said: the difference between a successful and a failed listing often lies in the details. Let’s analyze with concrete examples from my practice what makes a listing a champion versus an outsider.
Case comparison: Wooden chopping boards
Recently, two clients from Western Ukraine approached us, both manufacturing natural wood chopping boards. One earns $8,000 a month, the other barely $300. Let’s examine why.
Listing #1 (Successful) – Client Viktor:
Title: “Live Edge Walnut Cutting Board | Personalized Charcuterie Board | Wedding Gift | Ukrainian Handmade | Food Safe Natural Wood | Christmas Gift”
What’s done correctly:
- Keyword “Live Edge” – trending query with low competition
- Mention of specific occasions (wedding, Christmas)
- Indication of origin (Ukrainian Handmade) – works towards uniqueness
- 140 characters used most effectively
Listing #2 (Unsuccessful) – Client Petro:
Title: “Wooden Board | Kitchen Board | Board for Cutting | Natural Wood”
Errors:
- General, highly competitive keywords
- Repetition of the word “Board” without meaningful content
- Lack of emotional triggers
- Only 55 out of 140 characters used
Photos: visual story versus set of images
Viktor (successful listing):
- Main photo: Board on a white background, professional lighting, visible wood texture, occupying 85% of frame
- Lifestyle photo: Board with attractively arranged cheeses, fruits, and wine on a cozy kitchen background
- Details: Macro shot of the unique wood grain
- Size: Board next to a wine bottle for scale
- Process: Craftsman processing the board in workshop
- Personalization: Examples of engraving names and dates
- Packaging: Beautiful gift wrapping with a bow
- Infographic: Sizes, care instructions, benefits
- Video: 15-second overview with 360° rotation of the board
Result: CTR 3.2%, conversion 2.8.
Petro (unsuccessful listing):
- Main photo: Blurred photo of the board on a kitchen table with clutter in the background
- Second photo: Same board from a different angle
- Third photo: Board with knife (violating Etsy policy on displaying sharp objects)
Result: CTR 0.4%, conversion 0.1.
Description: story versus dry facts
Viktor – a selling description:
“Imagine the moment when your guests stop in their tracks upon seeing this unique board on your table. Every line of the wood tells a story of 80-year-old walnut from the Carpathian mountains…”
✨ Why you’ll love this board: – One of a kind – natural pattern never repeats – Treated with organic oil – food safe – Laser personalization – your message forever – Double-sided – one side for chopping, the other for serving
📏 Sizes: 16″ x 10″ x 1.5″ (40 x 25 x 4 cm) ⚖️ Weight: 3.5 lbs (1.6 kg)
🎁 Included:
- Scrubber sponge for maintenance
- Care instructions
- Gift wrapping
- Personalized note
“…I personally select each board and process it by hand. It takes 3-4 days, but the result is worth it. Over 10 years working with wood, I’ve learned to see the soul in each piece…”
Petro – a dull description:
“Wooden kitchen board. Material – wood. Suitable for cutting products. Medium size. Shipped by mail.”
Pricing and positioning
Viktor: $89 + $15 shipping
- Positioning: premium gift
- Price justification: uniqueness, personalization, gift packaging
- Discounts: 15% when buying 2+ boards
Petro: $25 + $25 shipping
- Positioning: unclear (cheap product with expensive delivery)
- Price justification: none
- Discounts: none
SEO optimization: all 13 tags versus 3 random ones
Viktor strategically uses all 13 tags:
- live edge cutting board
- personalized charcuterie board
- wedding gift for couple
- ukrainian handmade
- walnut serving board
- christmas gift for mom
- housewarming gift
- anniversary gift wood
- custom engraved board
- kitchen decor rustic
- cheese board personalized
- wooden gift for chef
- sustainable kitchen
Petro used only 3 tags:
- board
- kitchen
- wood
Results after 6 months
Viktor:
- 340 sales
- 127 positive reviews (5 stars)
- 31% repeat buyers
- Average check: $95
- Featured in 3 Etsy collections
Petro:
- 12 sales
- 3 reviews (average rating 3.5)
- 0% repeat buyers
- Average check: $25
- Visibility in search: page 15+

How to convert a non-effective listing into a bestseller
When Petro approached us for help, we redesigned his listing completely:

Week 3: SEO optimization, keyword research
Week 4: Launched Etsy Ads with a $5/day budget
Results after 30 days:
- CTR increased from 0.4% to 2.1%
- Conversion increased from 0.1% to 1.8%
- 23 sales (versus 2 in the previous month)
- First 5-star reviews
Remember: the difference between success and failure on Etsy often lies not in the quality of the product itself, but in how you present it. Invest time in creating a quality listing — it will pay off manifold.
Adapting products for the international market
How to sell on Etsy from Ukraine successfully? Most importantly: tailor your products for Western buyers:
Personalization – the key to high sales
On Etsy Ukraine, personalized products sell 3 times better. Here’s what works:
- Adding names/dates/initials
- Zodiac signs, birth years
- Choosing color/size/material
- Custom inscriptions/drawings
- Gift wrapping
Western Bid case: a leather wallet manufacturer increased the average check from $25 to $45 by adding a $10 personalization option.
Seasonality and trends
Etsy platform is very sensitive to seasons. The yearly plan:
- January-February: Valentine’s Day
- March-April: Easter, spring decor
- May-June: Wedding season, Mother’s Day
- July-August: Back to school preparations
- September-October: Halloween
- November-December: Black Friday, Christmas
Pricing for the international market
The pricing formula for etsy.com – reviews confirms its effectiveness:
(Cost price × 3) + Shipping + Etsy fees (10-15%) = Final price
Don’t be afraid of high prices! Buyers etsy.com are willing to pay for quality and uniqueness.

Essential tools
- eRank – keyword and competitor analysis

- Western Bid – parcel forwarding, fulfillment, and personal account with CRM
Additional tools
- Tailwind – Pinterest automation
- Later – Instagram scheduling
- Mailchimp – email marketing

Taxes and legal aspects
Important question for those studying Etsy: how to sell from Ukraine – business legalization:

Then, you can always continue as a sole proprietor of 2 or 3 groups:
- Single tax 5% (group 3)
- Simplified reporting
- Ability to operate VAT-free up to 7 million UAH per year
Withdrawal of funds
The scheme used by Western Bid clients:
- From Etsy to Payoneer
- From Payoneer to a Ukrainian bank (commission 3%) or
- From Payoneer to Western Bid (commission 1%) for shipping and service payments, the remaining funds can be withdrawn by any accessible method.
Important: Keep all transaction documents!
The future of Etsy and prospects for Ukrainian sellers
Etsy promotions are growing, and the platform is developing. What awaits us in 2025-2026:

Why now is the best time to start
- Etsy in Ukraine gaining popularity
- The competition is still low

Client success stories of Western Bid: how ordinary people built an extraordinary business
Case 1: From hobby to business – Olena’s story and her charming brooches
Olena from Kyiv is an English teacher who started making brooches just to escape the stress at work. “I would come home after lessons completely exhausted,” she recalls. “The only thing that calmed me was working with beads and crystals. I made brooches in the shapes of birds, flowers, insects… Friends started asking me to make the same for them.”
The turning point came when a friend from the USA saw her work on Instagram and offered to pay $50 for a hummingbird brooch. “I was in shock! In Kyiv, I sold them for 300 hryvnias to colleagues,” Olena laughs.
That was when she turned to Western Bid. Olena brought a box of 30 brooches to our office and skeptically asked, “Do people in America really want to pay for this?”
What we did together:
The first month was dedicated to basic setup. We photographed each brooch on a white background (Olena initially resisted – “But it looks better on a colorful scarf!”), wrote stories for each product, and set up tags. And then: “First sale! In Texas! For $75!”
By the end of the first month, she had $500 in sales – 8 brooches went to the USA, Canada, and even Australia.
Months 2-6: a period of growth and doubts
“The hardest thing was believing it wasn’t a temporary lucky streak,” Olena admits. She continued teaching during the day and making brooches in the evenings. By the third month, orders became so many that she was starting to delay shipments.
We implemented a system: Monday-Wednesday – making new brooches, Thursday – photoshoot, Friday – packaging and shipping. Olena hired her former student Olya to help with packing.
By the sixth month, her income reached $3,000. “That was my salary for THREE months of teaching,” she recalls.
A year later: from teacher to CEO
Now, after a year and a half, Olena has her own studio in the center of Kyiv. The team consists of three people: herself as the chief designer, production assistant Olya (the former student), and customer service manager Marina.
“Do you know what’s most amazing?” Olena says. “Recently, I received a wedding jewelry order for $500 from a bride in California. She wrote that my butterfly brooch reminded her of her grandmother from Ukraine. I cried when I read that letter.”
Current indicators:
- Monthly income: $8,000-10,000
- Number of orders: 80-100 per month
- Average check: $95
- Geography: 42 countries
- Reviews: 523 (average rating 4.9)★
- Repeat customers: 35%
“I still teach,” Olena grins. “But only two days a week and only to my favorite groups. Because now I can afford it.”
Case 2: Family business – how the Petrenkos turned a garage into an international toy factory
Vasily and Oksana Petrenko from a small town near Lviv have been making wooden toys for 8 years. It all started when Vasily, an engineer by training, made a wooden constructor for their son because “plastic ones would break in a week.”
“We sold toys at local fairs,” Oksana recounts. “On a good day, we could make 2000 hryvnias. On a bad day, we stood in the rain for 8 hours and sold two cars.”
Their 16-year-old son Taras once said: “Mom, Dad, why are you like dinosaurs? Let’s sell on Etsy!” He found Western Bid himself and persuaded his parents to get a consultation.
Starting with $200 and an old camera
“We had exactly $200 of free money,” Vasily remembers. “We spent $50 on a consultation with Victoria from WB, $30 on Etsy listings, $70 on materials for the first batch, and left $50 for shipping.”
The hardest part was taking photos. “We initially photographed with a phone on a tablecloth,” Oksana laughs. “Victoria gently told us that the photos… needed editing. We got out our grandfather’s Canon, built a lightbox from a cardboard box and a white sheet.”
5 days to the first “Chao-zin!”
This is how the Petrenko family calls the sound of a sale notification on Etsy. The first order arrived after 5 days – a set of wooden animals for a baby from Germany for $45.
“We all jumped around the kitchen!” Taras recalls. “Dad even opened cognac that he had saved for my graduation.”
From garage to workshop
After 3 months, orders became so many that the garage transformed into a full-fledged workshop. Vasily quit his factory job (“The boss said I was crazy”). Oksana left her role as an accountant at a local firm.
“The craziest moment was just before Christmas,” Vasily says. “48 orders in a week! We worked 16 hours a day, involved my brother and two neighbors. Taras packed parcels instead of doing homework. And we earned $8,000 in December!”
Philosophy of the family business
Now, each Petrenko parcel contains a small note with a photo of their family and the story of the toy. “Americans love these notes,” says Oksana. “One customer wrote that she hung it on her fridge.”
All relatives are involved in production: Vasily’s father crafts the parts, Oksana’s mother sews small bags for packaging, even the 80-year-old grandmother polishes the finished toys.
Current results:
- Monthly income: $15,000-18,000
- Sales record: $24,000 (December 2024)
- Team: 7 people (all relatives)
- Most expensive order: $450 (personalized play town)
- Geography: 35 countries (including Japan and New Zealand)
- Proud of: Petrenko toys are in a preschool in New York
“Do you know what’s the most important?” Vasily says. “Now we work together, as a whole family. Taras already plans how to expand the business after university. And Oksana and I can finally afford a vacation. The first in 10 years. We’re going to Italy – to see how they make wooden toys,” he laughs.
Case 3: Digital products – how Maksym works 10 hours a week and earns as a senior developer
Maksym from Kharkiv is a former designer at an advertising agency who burned out from constant client revisions. “I did 15 versions of a design to end up with the first one the client chose,” he recalls.
In 2023, after yet another nervous breakdown, Maksym quit. He had enough money for 2 months of living. His wife then showed him an article about selling digital products on Etsy.
From first template to passive income
“I thought it was a scam,” Maksym admits honestly. “Who would buy templates when there are free ones online?”
The first product was a set of wedding invitation templates – Maksym made them in one evening, using work he had done at the agency. Uploaded them, set the price at $15, and forgot about it.
One week later – the first sale. Then the second. By the end of the month – 12 sales. “I earned $180 without doing anything after uploading the files!”
A system that works on its own
After a consultation with Maria from WB, Maksym developed a system:
- Monday-Tuesday: creating 5-7 new templates
- Wednesday: listing design, SEO
- Thursday-Friday: free days
- Weekends: family
“The secret is to create things that truly solve people’s problems,” Maksym explains. “For example, my bestseller is wedding planning templates. Brides buy the whole set for $45 because they don’t want to think about the design.”
150 listings and a multiplication philosophy
Now Maksym has 150 active listings. But these are not 150 unique products – they are variations of 30 basic designs.
“I sell one invitation template in 5 options: classic, boho, minimalism, vintage, and modern. I change fonts, colors, elements – a new product appears.”
The most gratifying – reviews:
“Maksym, your templates saved my wedding! I saved $500 on a designer!” – Jennifer from Texas
“Used your planners for my small business. Clients love them!” – Maria from Italy
“Bought one template, came back for the whole collection” – Sarah from Australia
Life after burnout:
“Do you know what changed most?” Maksym reflects. “I now love design again. I do what I love MYSELF, not what clients demand after 10 calls.”
Now Maksym works from a coffee shop overlooking a park. In the mornings, he checks sales ($50-100 every morning), responds to rare customer questions, and the rest of the time – for family and hobbies.
Current indicators:
- Steady income: $2,000-2,500/month
- Work hours: 10 hours a week
- Number of sales: 200-250 per month
- Average check: $12
- Best month: $3,800 (December)
- Repeat customers: 40%
“My goal is to bring passive income up to $5,000 and travel with my family,” Maksym shares. “Already booked a month in Thailand. I’ll create new templates just on the beach. Can you imagine? Working 2 hours a day with a view of the ocean… But a year ago I thought my career was over.”
These stories are not exceptions. They are real people who just decided to try. Everyone had doubts, fears, moments when they wanted to give up. But they kept going. And now, their lives have changed forever. Your story can be next.

You can start with a small number of listings, but to test demand, it’s better to have at least a basic collection of products or variations. This gives a better chance of appearing in various search queries and understanding what converts best.
What is most important for the first sale on Etsy?
What is most important for the first sale on Etsy?
Most often, the key role is played not by a single factor, but by a combination: the right niche, strong photos, a clear headline, relevant tags, an adequate price, and good after-sales service.
What is more important for Etsy: SEO or photos?
What is more important for Etsy: SEO or photos?
Both elements are required. SEO helps to get into the search, and photos help to get clicks and sales. If one of these blocks is weak, the listing usually loses effectiveness.
Is it really possible for a beginner to earn on Etsy in 2025?
Is it really possible for a beginner to earn on Etsy in 2025?
Yes, but the result depends on the quality of the product, the competitiveness of the niche, the store design, systematic work with listings, and the willingness to regularly improve the offer. Etsy does not guarantee sales, but it provides access to a large international demand.
