Step 1. Market Research
The most important thing is market research. Market research involves certain skills. Maybe some things can be learned just by watching materials on YouTube. And some aspects can only be understood when you work directly with a craftsman, learn, exchange information, ask questions, and receive answers.
In every type of craft or manufacturing, there are nuances, aspects. You need to improve your level of preparation to know:
- Sizes
- Materials
- Competition
- Modern styles
- What prices are like
- Why some items cost much more, while others are very cheap
All these things people somehow do already in the process. But in reality, this is the first step — even before you find and feel your niche. You need to know and understand this.
Step 2. Concept review
The second thing is to validate the concept; confirmation and proof of the concept must be established. And for this, the last thing you want to do is make a bunch of things and already become attached to what you are doing. The less attachment you have at the beginning, the less money you spend on advertising and overall effort in promoting the product initially, the better. Because you will be more flexible and able to change your product faster.
How to check a concept?
Create a few things, a few paintings, a few samples. Free — no need to pay for advertising. Go and show it not to friends, acquaintances, or relatives, but to a target audience. Show your collection. You can make completely free posts on Instagram, Facebook, join groups, get feedback, and then adjust your product accordingly based on this research. Some, by the way, start by accepting individual orders, thereby learning about customers’ tastes and popular preferences, and tailoring their collections to this.
Step 3. Define Your Niche
Third step — when we have already done all this, found a proof of concept, we define our small narrow niche, one category. I won’t say more about this because it has been discussed many times. A narrow niche with its own narrow target audience.
Step 4. Come up with a name for the business
Fourth tip — you need to come up with a name for your business. And here, I highly recommend using ChatGPT for assistance.
Example of working with ChatGPT
I gave ChatGPT the following task:
“Come up with 20 names for my online business in English. My production and brand focus on creating unique jewelry for women aged 35–55, with middle income, married, running a household, having children, conservative, loving organic, natural, and eco-friendly materials. My brand should attract interest, be unboring, and have a positive impact on women’s outlook on life.”
And ChatGPT kindly provided the following names:
- Pure Grace Jewellery
- Echo Radiant Creation
By the way, this is the free version.
Initially, I liked Blossom and Shine — which means “bloom and shine”. But then I thought, if I make an abbreviation from these two words, it will be BS — not a very nice word in English. So instead of Shine, I chose a very beautiful word — Embrace — meaning “hug”, so “bloom and embrace”. I liked this name. Just as an example, this shows how to find a name for your store.
Step 5. Secure your domain and social media
You have determined that this is your name — Blossom and Embrace. This is your brand, this is your store’s name. Immediately register your domain. Let your store be BlossomandEmbrace.com.
Trademark Check
By the way, make sure this abbreviation is not trademarked. The place where you can search for trademarks is USPTO.gov. I can enter my word — Blossom and Embrace — which is my business name, and see if there are other stores. See, “no results found for research.” This is great. By the way, ChatGPT is good at this and does not give names that are already patented. But in any case, this USPTO.gov — there you can check if there is copyright on it.
What needs to be secured?
Secure immediately:
- Instagram account
- Facebook account
- Buy a domain
Because, likely, later you will need to open your store on Shopify.
Why Shopify?
We recommend Shopify. It significantly reduces all possible issues with the quality of your site and its setup. Creating a store on Shopify is so simple and easy. Especially if you already have a successful shop on Etsy, then definitely consider switching to Shopify, because Etsy is still not your business. Even if it operates, it does not belong to you — it belongs to Etsy. And if for some reason you cannot open a shop on Etsy, for example, your country does not support Etsy Payments, then Shopify is a great place.
Step 6. Create a logo and brand
The next step — or alongside this — create your logo and brand.
Example of creating a brand in Canva. Based on my name, I chose a brand. It was very easy to rename — Blossom and Embrace. I added, say, a photo of a model with some of the most interesting and popular items from my collection. I added something that reminds me of Blossom. It’s very easy to add, change, remove the background. There are many different effects. You can remove the background. For example, I had a girl with a background — I can easily remove it. See how simple it is — a few seconds.
Creating a logo. Next, we come up with our own logo. A logo can be an image, letters, or an abbreviation. Think about H&M, about Nike, how it looks. For example, I came up with: I have Blossom and Embrace, so B — a delicate and beautiful branch abbreviation B. Blossom and Embrace. And such a logo will suit both an Etsy shop (square) and match my design.
With Canva, it’s very easy to do all this — both the logo and the brand — so that everything corresponds to the same target audience and the same theme of your niche.
Step 7. Decide on purchasing materials
The next tip — you need to decide on purchasing materials, where and how you will produce your product.
Outsourcing through Alibaba. I have already shown how to outsource, i.e., find manufacturing partners in China through Alibaba. I came up with a certain design, but I don’t want to produce jewelry myself. So I will go to Alibaba — natural jewelry. Please note: they manufacture jewelry from natural materials.
How to choose a manufacturer?
You need to send your design, agree with them, and check that the manufacturers have a good rating. I wouldn’t recommend contacting those with a 4.6 out of 5, for example. It’s better to pay attention to 4.8 or 4.9. Read reviews to:
- Ensure they haven’t stolen your design
- Trustworthiness
- Timely deliveries
In my opinion, Alibaba is a good option because they guarantee the quality of manufacturers. It’s easier than searching somewhere on eBay or other sites that do not provide such guarantees.
Step 8. Prepare the technical package
Next — think about the technical package. If someone other than you will be producing your product, will they be able to understand from the photo or sketch:
- Where to make the seam
- How to secure here and there
- What the stitch should be
- Where to place the label
You need to create a technical drawing, a package that you will provide to the worker or manufacturer in China.
Step 9. Plan investments and inventory
After this, the question arises of investments, because if you produce through a partner, you need to decide:
- How will all this happen?
- Will you hold inventory?
- Where to store it?
- How much will it cost?
- And what if the batch doesn’t sell? Here again, the proof of concept plays a significant role.
Minimum batches
You can look into production, for example, with a rating of 4.9 — and the prices of their items. It always shows the quantity. From 1 to 5 — one price. Of course, the smaller the batch, the higher the price. For example, the minimum quantity — 50, 15 days for production. Some producers have 10 or 20 pieces. But minimum investments must be made.
Step 10. Promotion and Marketing
Next — promote your product, marketing. If you already have a proof of concept, you can invest money in advertising:
- On Etsy
- On Facebook
- On Google
About self-purchase
Some believe that self-purchase works. But it’s not you who makes the purchase, nor your relatives — Etsy quickly detects this, and it doesn’t work. Check out the marketing playlist — there are many useful tips from Western Bid.
Step 11. Product quality
The quality of your product is the foundation of your business. Don’t skimp on materials, and don’t rush the production. It’s better to do less, but with quality.
Step 12. Customer Service Quality
Last piece of advice — customer service quality. Is the customer always right? The customer is always right. I know, it sounds terrible, but very often, if you solve a problem well, the customer will be so satisfied that he:
- Leaves a positive review
- Recommends your shop
- Returns again
The best advertising is word of mouth. Five stars plus, left by your customers, and their recommendations. Word of mouth. No advertising — neither on Etsy nor on Facebook — can surpass this human communication. The best opportunity to promote your business. So pay attention to communication with the customer. Check out the materials in the playlist about customer communication — there are templates and tips on how to resolve conflict situations.

Western Bid.
