In 2026, personalization is not just a trend, but a key tool in e-commerce that allows you to multiply your sales on Etsy. Custom products have higher value, which increases the average check and profitability. The main risks are related to an increase in order processing time, but fulfillment services of Western Bid allow delegation of personalization and delivery, minimizing the load on the seller.

Hello. This is Victoria Zhidok speaking.

You are on the Western Bid blog, where we talk about Etsy and more. Our company opens up the world of international sales for you, accepts payments from your own websites, delivers your products worldwide, and offers pre-center and fulfillment-center services in the USA.

Today, we are discussing the personalization of your products, where the buyer can change something to suit themselves — a name on a mug, initials on a cover, color, date, or request. This is a trend that remains relevant, gaining even more momentum lately, and it is a real way to stand out among thousands of competitors.

Personalization — a global trend

‍Actually, personalization is a global trend in e-commerce, not just on Etsy. A few years ago, personalization was a nice bonus, but now it is a powerful sales tool both on marketplaces and in your own online store.

A study conducted by Deloitte found that 36% of consumers actively looked for customized products, indicating a growing demand for individual solutions.

If I may digress a little, I was very surprised when I saw a personalization option on the Notino website. I think women will understand me. When choosing a perfume or cosmetics, you can pay extra for engraving on the bottle. It’s really cool if you are buying something as a gift.

Pros of personalization

Now, let’s go through all the pros and cons of personalization. This is my subjective view, as we do not do mass personalization in our production. We have a few products with this option, so if any of our readers are sellers specializing in customization, I would be very happy if you add to my list.

For examples, I’ll base them on Etsy, because it is the most adapted for personalization. I would say that it’s a platform of emotional shopping, as 75% of buyers come here specifically for unique customized products for themselves or as gifts.

1. Personalization = Increased sales

This is the first advantage. For example, two T-shirts. The first one with just the text Best Dad Ever, and the second with an option to add a photo or text with the same inscription. Which one do you think sells better before Father’s Day?

Let’s check this through eRank. We see that these listings are almost the same age and were posted recently. Just note the expected monthly sales: without personalization, only two sales, and with personalization — 214. Unbelievable, can you imagine?

2. Increasing average check and profitability

All personalized products have a higher perceived value for buyers, so people are willing to pay more for uniqueness and added service. Going back to our T-shirts, we see a price difference of almost $15 to $26 plus minus for the same quality. Yes, of course, the cost of a custom T-shirt will be higher—by a maximum of $1-2, but the margin will be many times higher.

I know many sellers who purchase such services themselves — for example, custom printing or engraving — without having their own equipment, and make good money on personalization. Later on, if everything goes well, they invest and purchase the necessary equipment. This is a large segment.

3. Strong emotional connection with the buyer

This leads to another advantage — a strong emotional bond with your customer, thus more repeat purchases and loyalty.

4. Higher listing quality score

Another plus of personalization is that such listings have a higher quality score, as potential consumers better engage with those listings, add to favorites more often, and make more purchases. Consequently, your listing will have a higher ranking in search results.

5. Minimal returns

If we consider delivery of personalized products, we can also mention that such items are almost never returned, because according to Etsy rules, customized products are non-returnable. Certainly, this is a big plus, as I personally have some percentage of returns which require extra expenses and cause logistical problems.

Cons of personalization

Regarding the cons, honestly, I haven’t listed many. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

1. Increased processing time for orders

The biggest downside for me personally is the increased time to process orders, and besides time, it also involves resources. You can’t ship immediately after receiving the order; you need to create a design, agree everything with the client, and sometimes more than once.

A piece of advice for everyone: the more detailed and clear your instructions for personalization are, the less time you’ll spend on approval with the customer. However, sometimes you have to wait for clients’ responses to approve the design, which delays shipping.

2. Increased workload on the seller

The second disadvantage, which stems from the first, is increased workload on the seller. Unfortunately, automation of custom orders isn’t possible; you need to work constantly with individual requests, which takes time and resources, especially if you work alone.

Risks of customization

There are also certain risks associated with personalization, which sellers should consider, and I wouldn’t say they are disadvantages. For example, the risk of mistakes in personalization — the wrong name written, wrong color chosen, or approval of a design — resulting in a ruined product and unhappy customer.

Another risk is meeting the promised delivery times, so control over these deadlines is necessary, and choosing a reliable delivery method is important. Of course, this may be more expensive, but the buyer receives their order on time. Many of our clients opt for express delivery services to sleep more peacefully, I assume. Of course, risks increase during the high sales season.

Western Bid solutions

Our company offers to minimize all these risks and turn all disadvantages into advantages. This especially applies to our clients who use our fulfillment-center services and send their products to our warehouse.

For you, the service of personalizing your products directly at our Miami warehouse is available. It’s a great opportunity that allows you to sell more, deliver faster, spend less, without buying equipment, managing complex logistics, or losing time.

Conclusions

So, personalization is not just a fashionable trend; I’d say it’s a strategic direction for business development for sellers who want to stand out in the market, sell at higher prices, gain more satisfied customers, and build an emotional connection with the buyer. It’s an excellent tool for increasing product value, average check, and customer loyalty, but the seller must be prepared for additional time, resources, and responsibility.

  • Why do personalized products on Etsy often sell better than regular ones?
Because customization increases the emotional value of the product: the buyer gets not just a thing, but something unique for themselves or as a gift, and is willing to pay more for it.
  • What are the real benefits of personalization for the seller, besides higher prices?
In addition to increasing the average check, personalized products have better listing engagement, fewer returns, and help build long-term customer loyalty.
  • What challenges and risks can a seller face with product personalization?
The main difficulties are additional time for order approval, increased workload, and the risk of mistakes, so it’s important to plan processes and logistics in advance.
