Hello. My name is Victoria Zhidok, and I work with Western Bid in Chernihiv. We help entrepreneurs enter international markets every day: accepting payments, setting up overseas delivery, and also using the services of pre-centers and fulfillment in the USA.
On our channel, we occasionally talk about paid promotion on Etsy. For example, recently there was a material about Offsite Ads — external advertising. If you haven’t seen it yet, I recommend checking it out. Why do I keep returning to the topic of advertising? Because now organically it has become much more difficult to succeed, especially for new shops.
Etsy itself shows in its reports that the overall traffic on the platform is decreasing, while the number of sellers continues to grow. Competition is becoming tougher, and many still don’t understand how advertising works. As a result — money is spent with no return, or complete disappointment in Etsy Ads.
This is why I want to calmly and point-by-point analyze what might cause Etsy advertising not to work. We will discuss the seven most common reasons. This material is suitable both for those just starting and for those already selling but not seeing results from advertising.
Reason № 1: Poor SEO
Advertising on Etsy never works “in a vacuum.” If a listing isn’t optimized, no advertising will save it. This concerns keywords, tags, titles, and descriptions — all of which must match how buyers are actually searching for the product.
I often see situations where a seller launches ads, but the listing is written “for themselves,” not for search. By the way, there is a separate video on the channel about keyword selection — I show in detail how to target customer queries.
Important point: SEO first, and only after that, advertising. There is no other order.
Organic + Ads = Results
Organic promotion and advertising on Etsy do not compete with each other. On the contrary — they complement each other. When a listing already has good SEO, ads start working much more steadily and predictably.
This mistake is often made by new sellers. I started that way myself: published a few listings, turned on ads — and see how the budget is decreasing. The algorithm simply doesn’t have time to learn because there is no base.
If SEO is weak, ads either quickly “consume” the daily budget or almost don’t get clicks. In both cases, effectiveness is zero.
Reason № 2: Insufficient duration of the advertising campaign
The second reason logically follows from the first — ads are turned off too early. Etsy explicitly recommends running campaigns for at least 30 days so that the system can gather data and optimize the displays.
Ads need time to learn
The advertising algorithm doesn’t understand your product from day one. It needs time to “figure out” whom and under what queries to show the listing. Therefore, turning off ads after three or four days is almost always a mistake.
My approach is simple: after launching, do not touch the listing for at least 10–14 days. Only then can you look at the numbers and draw conclusions. This way, you will see which products are worth leaving in ads and which to remove.
Do not abruptly stop funding
Suddenly turning off ads almost always impacts store traffic negatively. Even a slight reduction in budget can temporarily decrease impressions. So, all changes should be made gradually, without sudden movements.
Reason № 3: Low advertising budget
The budget isn’t just a number. It’s a tool. And if it’s small, it needs to be used very precisely. For example, if you have $5 a day, don’t advertise everything indiscriminately. It’s better to select a few listings that already show some activity and focus on them.
For completely new shops, a different approach can be taken: turn on ads for all products, see where clicks appear, and leave only those positions in ads. That way, the budget starts working smarter.
Reason № 4: Insufficient sales before launching ads
When there are no sales at all, advertising may work worse — simply because of buyer distrust. Especially if the product is not obviously popular. On the other hand, advertising is sometimes an investment. It helps to get initial sales and start the process.
If the shop is new, it’s important to show that real people stand behind it. Fill out the About Us section, add photos, videos, and tell your story. It really works. There are exceptions. If the product is trending and demand is obvious, sales can appear even without organic reach. In my practice, I had a case where the first sale in a new shop came from advertising on the second day. Here, everything depends on the product.
Reason № 5: Poor product photos and lack of videos
Etsy is a visual platform. If photos are weak, no advertising will help. This is one of the most banal but also the most common reasons for failure.
Photos should be clear, clean, without unnecessary details. Show the product from different angles, give the buyer a chance to “look around.” I often say that photos should be appetizing.
Videos provide what photos cannot: a sense of realism. They show scale, texture, movement. For clothing, jewelry, or decor, this is especially important. Plus, videos increase trust in the shop.
Reason № 6: Ignoring Etsy advertising analytics
Etsy provides enough data for analysis: clicks, conversions, expenses, ROAS. If these figures are not analyzed, advertising becomes a game of chance. Sometimes a listing gets many clicks but doesn’t sell. Another may get fewer clicks but has a good conversion rate. Without analytics, you won’t see this. Regular analysis helps reallocate the budget and focus on what really brings profit.
Reason № 7: Ignoring seasonal trends and holiday periods
Selling on Etsy hugely depends on seasonality. Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Easter — these are periods when demand increases many times over.
During holiday periods, advertising requires a separate plan. Competition grows, so you often need to increase the budget or bids to stay visible. If you don’t, you can just get “lost” among other sellers.
Conclusion
If you have questions — write. We will discuss and try to analyze your specific situation. The main thing — don’t perceive advertising as a magic button, but as a tool that needs proper setup.
Why doesn’t advertising on Etsy work even with a good product?
The most common problem is not the product itself but SEO, photos, or too short an advertising period. Without basic optimization, advertising simply has nothing to work with.
How long does it take for Etsy Ads to show results?
On average, from 2 to 4 weeks. The algorithm needs time to learn, so don’t expect quick results in most cases.
Is it possible to sell on Etsy without advertising at all?
You can, but it’s more difficult, especially for new shops. In the current conditions, advertising often becomes a way to get initial sales and gather data for future growth.
