International shipping from Ukraine can be profitable if you avoid four basic mistakes: ignoring package dimensions (volumetric weight), failing to account for marketplace commissions (up to 17%), setting a single rate for the whole world, and not pre-calculating the cost. Optimizing box sizes by even 2 cm can save about $1 on each parcel, and using the Western Bid calculator allows delivery to the USA from $6 and to Europe from $5.

Hello! My name is Viktoria ZhidoK. I represent Western Bid in Chernihiv and am also developing my own business on Etsy. Today we continue the topic of beginner mistakes in international sales, and discuss the topic delivery in 2026. Honestly — I’ve made all these mistakes myself. Just because I didn’t know there was another way. But now I do, and I want to share it with you.

Many still hesitate to enter the international market precisely because they don’t understand how to ship goods from Ukraine worldwide. Or they have already opened a store on Etsy or another platform, but the shipping — is complete chaos. If this is about you, keep reading, because I’ve gathered the most common shipping mistakes new sellers encounter abroad.

Mistake №1: How to calculate the real cost of international shipping?

This is probably the most common mistake. And yes, I’ve made it at the very beginning too.

What does it look like? You have a product, you opened an Etsy shop, listed your first item. You set the price similar to competitors, and offer free shipping to avoid hassle.

This was my personal story. Even then, I understood there could be issues with shipping — I didn’t even know which courier to send with. But I patiently waited for a sale.

And it finally came. First joy, then anxiety and confusion. I had no idea how to pack the item, how to ship it, and how much it would cost. I sent the order, but how much stress it caused! And along with that — money. On the first order, I didn’t just break even, I went into a loss.

In fact, this is a very common story. So the simple conclusion: first, if you plan to sell abroad — determine how you will ship your goods, and calculate the actual shipping cost for different countries.

At Western Bid, for example, there are many different shipping options you can familiarize yourself with on the website. There is also a convenient shipping calculator for cost estimation — delivery to Europe from $5 per parcel, to the USA from $6.

Mistake №2: How volumetric weight and package size affect the price?

If you didn’t make the first mistake — that’s good, you’ve prepared well. But there is another trap you might fall into later.

The cost of shipping depends not only on the actual weight of the item but also on the dimensions of the box. Sometimes the product isn’t heavy but voluminous — then the shipping is calculated based on the package size. The larger the box, the more expensive the shipping.

I will show an example from my own experience. My product weighs only 140 grams, very light. I initially chose packaging that seemed optimal — small but volumetric. We started working with this packaging.

The dimensions were: length, width, height 5 cm. Despite the actual weight being 140 g, the volumetric weight increased to 210 g. Consolidation + UPS shipping cost $6.94.

Then my supplier ran out of these boxes and offered others. I was surprised: the new packaging seemed larger, but the shipping cost was lower!

New dimensions: longer box (21 cm), same width, and height — 3 cm instead of 5. The weight remained the same. And what do we see? The calculated weight now equals the actual — 140 g. Just by reducing the height of the box by 2 cm, we reduced volume. The shipping cost was $5.82. That’s a dollar cheaper than the previous option!

So when choosing packaging, consider different options to select the most cost-effective.

Mistake №3: How hidden commissions of Etsy and eBay affect income?

You already prepared well, found the optimal packaging, calculated shipping costs, chosen a carrier. But there is another nuance that affects your income.

Marketplace commissions are charged not only on the product price but also on the shipping cost. Yes, I wasn’t mistaken — a commission is taken from the product price PLUS the shipping cost.

For example, on Etsy, you can set free shipping (the shipping cost is included in the price) or specify a fixed shipping fee, paid separately by the buyer. In both cases, Etsy charges its commission. On average, this is about 17%. This must be considered when pricing your product, including the actual shipping cost, so as not to go into a loss.

Don’t forget also about additional expenses: shipping of packages within Ukraine to the consolidation warehouse, cost of the packaging itself. For example, I find it convenient to add these costs to the product’s cost — it makes margin calculation easier.

Mistake №4: How to set up shipping profiles for different countries?

If you plan to sell worldwide, don’t set the same shipping rate for different countries. It will differ, and more — the shipping method and carrier can also vary.

“What, do I have to calculate all countries?!” — you might say. No, you don’t. Focus on main directions.

From my experience and Western Bid clients’ experience, I recommend calculating the countries with the most orders:

  • USA and Canada
  • EU countries
  • Countries outside the EU (United Kingdom, Australia)

Next, you will see where your orders come from and can adjust your shipping profiles in the store accordingly.

My orders from the USA and Europe, for example, are shipped through different methods and carriers. It’s more profitable for me — and that’s okay. By the way, Western Bid is constantly adding new shipping options. Recently, they added FedEx Priority Ukraine, which is especially attractive for parcels over 5 kg. Overall, the company strives to offer the lowest shipping prices on the market.

Western Bid simplifies the process

If you create shipments through the Western Bid personal account and work on Etsy, eBay, or Shopify — all orders are synchronized automatically. No need to spend time entering buyer’s details and address manually. It takes only a few minutes to create a shipment.

  • Why do Ukrainian sellers often lose money on international shipping?
Mostly because shipping costs are not pre-calculated. Free shipping, unaccounted dimensions, marketplace commissions, and additional expenses quickly turn a first sale from joy into a financial loss.
  • How does packaging influence the international shipping price?
The shipping cost depends not only on the weight but also on the size of the box. Even a few centimeters in height can change the volumetric weight and make shipping more expensive. Therefore, choosing the optimal packaging directly affects your margin.
  • What should be considered when setting up delivery for different countries?
Equal shipping prices for the whole world almost always work against the seller. USA, Europe, and other countries have different rates and delivery methods. It’s better to focus on key destinations and set up shipping profiles so that shipping is profitable for you.

I hope now shipping abroad and calculating its cost doesn’t seem too complicated. And most importantly — you will avoid the most common mistakes that can cost real money.

Wishing you many sales, and how to ship orders — we already know.
