Brief Summary

Shopify is not a marketplace, but an independent website store where the seller must independently generate traffic through branding, advertising, social networks, or other promotion channels. That’s why Shopify is best suited not for a casual startup “from zero without a plan,” but for businesses that already have a product, a team, or at least a clear customer acquisition model.

This article compiles basic facts and figures about Shopify: who the platform is suitable for, who it is not, the scale of the Shopify ecosystem in 2024, the level of mobile traffic, the approximate success rate of stores, and why Shopify should be viewed as a branding tool rather than a source of automatic traffic.

Who is this article for

  • For sellers wondering whether to open a store on Shopify.
  • For brands, manufacturers, and dropshipping businesses planning to launch their own e-commerce.
  • For those comparing Shopify with Etsy, eBay, and other marketplaces.
  • For those who want to understand which business model really works on Shopify and the figures behind the platform.

Essence

Shopify is not suitable for everyone. If a business lacks a brand, a promotion plan, a team, or at least a stable traffic source, a Shopify store by itself will not generate sales, as might happen on a marketplace.

But for a brand, manufacturing, dropshipping, or a business with an established audience, Shopify can be a very powerful tool. That is why the article emphasizes not only the numbers but also a proper understanding of the Shopify store model itself.

Who Shopify is suitable for and who it isn’t

Type of business Is Shopify suitable? Why What to consider
Brand with its own audience Yes There is a base for traffic and repeat sales You need to systematically work on marketing
Manufacturing or offline business going online Yes There is a product and opportunities for scaling A team or a person responsible for marketing is needed
Dropshipping business Yes The model works well with advertising and impulse demand You need to know how to buy traffic
Handmade seller without a team and without time for promotion Probably not Shopify does not provide an automatic flow of buyers It’s better to first test demand on Etsy
Seller without a customer acquisition plan No Without traffic, the store won’t work on its own A promotion strategy is needed before launch

Checklist: Is it worth opening a store on Shopify

  1. You have a product or brand that can be promoted independently of marketplaces.
  2. You understand where you will drive traffic to the website from.
  3. You have at least minimal resources for marketing, content, or advertising.
  4. You do not expect Shopify to bring in customers without promotion.
  5. You need your own controlled sales channel, not just presence on a marketplace.
  6. You are ready to build a brand, not just list a product and wait for organic traffic.

What does creating your own brand mean?

I was showing successful stores live, for example, this, let’s say, someone invented a cartoon character. And they promoted it, again, through social networks, making it popular. And now they print this character on T-shirts, hoodies, mugs, it doesn’t matter. And this merchandise, so to speak, is sold through their website, which they made on Shopify. That is, products with a brand, or, for example, a person already has production, several stores, let’s say they manufacture clothing, footwear, etc. They want to, so to speak, expand into the internet space, they already have people in their team handling marketing. Well, now, they hired these people to promote their production on Instagram, TikTok, and others. And they post some cool, trendy models there and start, so to speak, expanding their business and going abroad with it. Shopify is a great solution for all these types of businesses.

Let's now talk about statistics

If you already have a store there or think that your business fits this model—drop shipping, manufacturing, or branding—let’s take a look at what this actually is, in terms of the size of the marketplace. So, on Shopify, there are approximately 4.8 million stores in 2024. Shopify accounts for over $404 billion of global economic activity. That is, the number of people buying goods and services through stores created with Shopify. Shopify’s own revenue is $4.9 billion for the first three quarters of 2023. As of 2024, Shopify had 700 million consumers. By the way, this statistic is very inaccurate because it creates the impression that it is like a Marketplace. Well, there are 48 consumers on Etsy, 700 million consumers on Shopify. Don’t let this statistic distract you because it’s the number of customers each individual store attracts for itself. 79% of Shopify’s total traffic comes from mobile devices, and most importantly, what we need to know is that the success rate of Shopify stores varies from 5 to 10%. Interestingly, this statistic is almost the same in almost all countries. 95% of all businesses fail on average, and only 5% survive. So, you could say that the statistics on Shopify might even be better—ranging from 5 to 10%.

Next is the Shopify income statistics

So, as I already mentioned, 444 billion dollars is the total economic activity. In 2023, Shopify’s revenue amounted to $6.6 billion. Even a bit more. Can you imagine? $6.6 billion. That is a huge company. Let’s just carefully look now at how revenues have changed since the first quarter of 2020. If you remember, the first quarter of 2020 coincided with the start of COVID. The very beginning. Especially the second and third quarters. So, at that time, revenues were about a billion dollars. Which is also quite a lot, but still. And now, over three years, we are talking about, after the pandemic’s surge, most marketplaces, not like eBay, for example, not Etsy, after that, greatly declined. But Shopify did not fall. Shopify continued its growth, from half a billion dollars to 1.7 billion in the third quarter of 2023. By the way, here’s another interesting Shopify statistic: how much they earn from subscriptions. They take $29 a month. Since 2015, when it was $111 million, up to 2023, they earned only on subscriptions $1.3 billion. I am not talking now about other forms, apps, etc. Various themes that people purchased. The market capitalization of Shopify will be approximately $94.3 billion in 2024.

‍Now let’s talk a little about Shopify usage statistics. Shopify allows its clients to manage products, process payments, track orders, and deliver items. This enables people to easily manage their entire business from a single place. That is, customer relations, responses to buyers, analytics, advertising integration, and connection with various other marketplaces and services. Everything needed for running an online business is in Shopify. As I mentioned, Shopify has 700 million consumers. That is, the stores on Shopify, which attracted these clients themselves, have 700 million customers overall. For comparison, in 2014, it was just 28 million. Notice how the number of Shopify clients grew in 2004—from 28 million to 700. So, the growth is colossal, as you see? More and more stores are conducting their economic activities through Shopify. Overall, you need to understand that as of 2023, over 2 billion people are making purchases, services, or goods online. That is a huge number of people.

‍Shopify is open in all countries, in 175 countries. An interesting statistic is that 70% of all Shopify store domains are registered in the United States. By the way, you will need to pay separately for your domain. Shopify gives you a free domain, but it will necessarily include your website’s address, with ‘myshopify’ in the URL. So, if you want to open a store on mashikamianovich.com, you will need to pay for such a domain, but generally, no matter where you host your site, it costs around $14-15 a year. And overall, of the 70% of domains from US sellers who are actually working with the US, 50% are on this. That is, 20% are opening their sites with a US domain but actually selling goods from entirely different countries. For example, here is an interesting list of the top 10 companies with their own sites on Shopify: Tesla, LVMH, Nestlé, AB InBev, Kraft Heinz, Lindt & Sprüngli, Whole Foods, Red Bull, and Hyatt Hotels.

‍By the way, here’s some interesting info you probably didn’t know: Shopify stores can be bought and sold. Did you know? That you can put your successful and well-known Shopify store, which already has a flow of clients, up for sale on a marketplace. The most popular ones are Empire Flippers and Flippa.

‍Now, perhaps it’s time to share the most interesting thing that interests you—the average income of a Shopify store. I am not talking about stores that just make some money. So, the average income, not profit, again—income—is $5583 per month, which is approximately $67,000 per year. That’s not very high. So, generally speaking, besides Tesla and Hyatt, Shopify mainly works for small enterprises.

‍Now let’s discuss the success rate of stores. As I briefly mentioned, on average, 5 to 10 percent of all stores that open are successful. After the 2019 pandemic, Shopify stores grew by 251 percent. 531 thousand or 23.6 percent of Shopify stores sell clothing. Can you imagine? Clothing is the most popular category of products. There are 2.9 million stores operating from the USA.

‍Let’s look at this data across different countries. So, the USA has 2,975,470 stores opened. In the UK, interestingly, 205 thousand. Australia ranks third with 152 thousand. Now, let’s see how this splits across regions. Look at the number of stores opening in America, Europe, Oceania, and Asia. In total, over 2.5 million stores have appeared after the pandemic.

‍Now we move to the final very interesting statistic—the categories of products that sell best on Shopify. Clothing—531 thousand, home and garden—230 thousand, health and beauty—192 thousand. These are the total stores in these categories. Jewelry and watches—almost 28 thousand stores. Fashion accessories—22 thousand. Food and drinks—16 thousand. Art—11 thousand. Sports goods—7.7 thousand. Electronics—6.8 thousand. Car parts for passenger and freight vehicles—6,230, and other products—65 thousand. You see, if your products fall into one of these categories, your chances to promote them easily through social media are much higher. There’s a reason why fashion clothing and accessories sell better online via Shopify.

Expert Opinion

The biggest mistake in perceiving Shopify is expecting it to behave like a marketplace. Shopify does not sell on your behalf: it provides the infrastructure for your brand, but the entire flow of customers, trust, and demand must be created by the business itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Shopify: a marketplace or a standalone store?

The article explicitly emphasizes that Shopify is not a marketplace. It is a standalone online store, which the seller must independently drive traffic to through marketing, social media, branding, or advertising.

According to the page content, Shopify is best suited for brands, manufacturers, dropshipping businesses, service providers, and teams that already have or can create a customer acquisition system.

The article explicitly states that Shopify is not suitable for those who do not have an idea, a promotion plan, and a resource for traffic. For handmade sellers without time for marketing, the author recommends testing demand on Etsy or eBay first.

Because, as clearly explained in the text, people often mistakenly expect from Shopify the same as from a marketplace: an automatic flow of buyers. But Shopify only works when the business itself creates this flow.

The page provides an estimate that the success rate of Shopify stores varies approximately from 5 to 10%, and the author separately notes that this correlates with overall business survival statistics.

What to do next

Start with an honest assessment of your model: if you have a brand, a product, and a traffic plan, Shopify can become a strong sales channel. If you need a ready flow of buyers without your own marketing, it’s best to first test demand on marketplaces.
