Oil paintings are always valued more than paintings with other paints. Firstly, because oil is more expensive. Secondly, from my perspective as an amateur artist, it is much more difficult to paint with oil: paintings take longer to dry and it’s not as easy to fix a mistake, unlike, for example, acrylic. It’s a completely different technique. And mostly, the competition in abstract art is in acrylic, while there are not so many oil paintings on Etsy. It’s a special niche, and of course, they are more expensive, especially originals.
If we look at the data for the Oil Painting query through Marmalade — over the last year, demand has noticeably increased compared to the previous five years. Competition is high too, but 867 thousand listings for this general word isn’t as scary as it seems. After all, everyone describes their painting differently: some by color, some by genre. So if you can paint with oil — go ahead and do it.
1. Green paintings and green interior
A style of Art Nouveau is returning, along with it — the green color. You might argue: well, nature is already green, many paintings are default green. But no, it’s about something else — simply green paintings as such are now more popular. Botanical styles, grandmillennial, cottagecore — all of them somehow always incorporate green. And on Etsy, there aren’t actually many purely green paintings for a green interior. What exists sells well.
For example, a small 18×24 inch painting sells for $102, and a painting of a standard exhibition size — for $818. Small miniatures are also perfect: $58 for a tiny format. Green is also nice because it fits into blue interiors, beige, gray, even black-and-white — almost neutral.
An interesting example: a very realistic painting where people are swimming not in blue pool water, but in green. Such unexpected decisions work. On Anthropologie — where many are prints rather than originals — modern textured landscapes are sold for $200–300. There are also very minimalist works with tiny green accents. There is Moody, Dreamy — a combination of green and gray with a touch of blue. Mystical blurred paintings. Paintings with a dark green background behind a still life or flowers. If you are painting a portrait and thinking about what to dress the person in, — green could work.
Here’s one painting that I somehow really liked: a woman lying and sleeping. It’s not entirely green — more bluish-gray, but there is something about it. It creates quite a specific mood of drowsiness. I’d call it expressionist because it evokes a feeling. All modern art, a large part of it, somehow focuses precisely on green light.
2. Personalized portraits from photo
This topic has always been popular — I talked about it 5–6 years ago, three years ago, and it continues to be trending. Commission oil painting from photo.
The most important thing from the buyer’s perspective is an interesting style and resemblance. Here’s an example: a portrait stylized in the manner of Van Gogh, Starry Night. It doesn’t matter if it’s real oil or digital artwork — the essence is an interesting, recognizable style. And at the same time, the girl in the painting resembles the girl in the photograph. This is key.
I have been commissioned to paint portraits several times in my life. And here’s what was interesting: seemingly all facial features were correct, proportions accurate, eyes matched the nose. But it wasn’t me. My loved ones looked and didn’t recognize it. So it’s so important — no matter what style the painting is in, Impressionism, Expressionism, Minimalism, one-line art — people need to recognize the person. And achieving resemblance with just one line is probably even more difficult than in realism.
Realism is very popular now. A 24×48 inch portrait costs $460. Family portraits, wedding portraits — be sure to target your audience. Separate listing for family portraits with keywords personalized family portrait, and another for wedding portrait. And show the original photograph next to the portrait in the listing — this really helps with sales. The buyer wants to see that the painting resembles, that it’s not AI or digital editing, but hand-painted from photo. Show brushstrokes, show the process — this increases the value of the work.
Another type of portrait worth paying attention to is portraits in vintage style. Dark background, light falling from one side, like in Rembrandt. It’s from the same botanical theme — antique, classical. Very beautiful and sells quite well.
3. Textured painting: impasto and palette knife
This theme was popular 7 years ago, is popular now, and its popularity is only growing. Textured, impasto, 3D — these are all synonyms of one phenomenon. A painting where oil is applied in such a way that you literally see and feel the texture. Flowers seem real, the sky—alive, and the wave—so inviting that you want to step into it.
I personally simply adore such paintings. They have something special. Impasto is a brighter style with rich colors. Textured — slightly more subdued, but also volumetric.
An important point for business: do not make only one version of a painting. Offer different sizes in one listing. A small format of 8×8 inches and a large 24×24 are different price points and appeal to different buyers. A 24×24 painting in 20+ baskets costs $792. Mountains in japandi or Scandinavian design, 40×60 inches — $479. Textured Ocean Wave, large format — from $460 to $1248 depending on size and framing. Coastal Sunset 48×72 with a gold frame — $1300, and also in 20+ baskets.
Don’t forget about trends in miniatures and paintings in oval and round frames—they also work great in impasto format. Everything — waves, mountains, cities, and flowers — can be painted in a way that it looks alive.
4. Antique Rose — antique rose
The demand for this query increases from September to December — a seasonal but steady peak. This continues the botanical theme: round and oval gold frames, dark background, realistic roses. Honestly, such a picture is very difficult to create. This level of realism is approximately as unreachable for me as an oil portrait.
And believe me — this is not only unattainable for me but also for many amateur artists. That’s why there aren’t many such paintings on Etsy, and what is there sells quickly. One was left in two baskets. If you know how to paint realistic flowers, put a gold or beautiful vintage frame and call it antique rose painting — I think it will sell very quickly.
And here — peonies. Moody, expressive. They definitely have something.
5. Clouds
Cumulus clouds are a very popular topic, and there are many of them. Simply because they are easy to paint: competition for 40 thousand positions under the query Cloud Painting. But engagement and searches are quite good.
On Anthropologie — there are just a huge number of them, and they are sold for $268 per print. Clouds in the sunset with bright light, dark and moody, blue, green, neutral beige-brown, with yellow sunlight — there are many variations. Small and large. Those that can be hung in a child’s room.
