The customer is always right. It sounds nice, but when you’re a seller on Etsy \u2014 it often sounds like a verdict. All risks: delivery, delays, damage, simply human factor \u2014 they fall squarely on you. Most online marketplaces operate on this logic: in most cases, the seller simply loses their money. So, is there a real mechanism to protect Etsy sellers? Or should you immediately factor these risks into the price of the product?<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Whatever the case may be, I would recommend in any case to include a certain percentage for entrepreneurial risks in the cost of the product. I typically include about 2% in addition to the product price \u2014 because no one will protect you better than yourself. And this is important for another reason: not all orders automatically qualify for the protection program, and there are significant restrictions based on order value.<\/p>

\u200dFor example, if the buyer is not satisfied with the product and wants to return it \u2014 this will not be reimbursed by Etsy. Or, as happened to me: we under-fulfilled an order \u2014 simply forgot to add hooks to the hanger. A small mistake, human factor, it happens. We had to resend at our own expense.<\/p>

\u200dTherefore, immediately include in the product price the possibility of such unpleasant situations \u2014 so as not to lose money on trivial matters.<\/p>

How the Etsy Seller Protection Program Works.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>

When a buyer reports that they did not receive their order \u2014 this is where you can fight back, especially when tracking shows the package was delivered. This is the most common type of order that qualifies for the seller protection program.<\/p>

Main restriction: the order value plus shipping plus taxes should not exceed $250 USD (or the equivalent of this amount in another currency). If your product costs more \u2014 Etsy protection will not apply.<\/p>

The program covers four situations:<\/strong><\/p>

  1. Product not delivered \u2014 the buyer did not receive the package (it was lost during transit or stolen).<\/li>
  2. Product arrived damaged \u2014 this applies only once a year for the first such order.<\/li>
  3. Product was delayed \u2014 beyond the expected delivery window.<\/li>
  4. The buyer claims the product does not match the description and photos in the listing \u2014 although it actually does.<\/li><\/ol>

    If any of these reasons occurred, the buyer reports the problem to the seller through Help Request or directly opens a claim through Etsy. Etsy representatives review the case, and if the order meets all criteria \u2014 Etsy refunds the buyer at their own expense, while the seller keeps their earnings. All this happens almost automatically: the case is opened and closed almost simultaneously.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Based on this information, Etsy calculates the estimated delivery date, which is shown to buyers. If this is missing \u2014 the listing will not be eligible for the protection program.<\/p>

    All cases<\/a> opened by buyers are located in the Help \u2192 Your cases tab. From my own experience: the main reason for complaints is “item not received.” This is the reason most frequently chosen by buyers.<\/p>

    \u200dBut when I see that the status of the parcel is delivered \u2014 I do not rush to immediately direct the buyer to open a complaint on Etsy, although such an order is almost guaranteed to fall under the seller protection program. I try to first help the buyer understand the situation. Very often, packages are left in the mailbox, and buyers simply do not check there. Also common is cases where the shipment is received by neighbors or other family members \u2014 and only then it turns out that everything is fine with the order.<\/p>

    \u200dParticipation of the seller in this process, by the way, is often noted with a good review from the buyer \u2014 which, I believe, is quite good.<\/p>

    \u200dAnd only when the buyer continues to insist that they still did not receive their order \u2014 I send them to open a complaint.<\/p>

    \u200dAn example: I had a case where the buyer opened a complaint, stating that the color did not match what he saw in the listing photo \u2014 and even added photos. According to him, the color did not match his furniture color. I remember this client: I offered him a return, but he said he wasn\u2019t going to pay for shipping \u2014 and quickly went to open a case. Etsy reviewed the situation and closed the case: issued a refund to the buyer, but at their own expense. No money was deducted from me.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Sometimes it seems that some buyers may abuse this<\/a>: they open a dispute, receive a refund from Etsy \u2014 and keep the product. Etsy says they monitor this, but I don’t know how effective it is.<\/p>

    \u200dI have only had one case where Etsy did not refund the buyer from their account and rejected their dispute. It was like this: the first failed delivery attempt, the buyer did not receive their order and redirected it to the pickup point \u2014 where the package somehow got lost. Etsy decided that the fault was entirely on the buyer. The buyer couldn’t prove otherwise, and Etsy simply withdrew and canceled their dispute.<\/p>

    \u200dBut this is rather an exception. Mostly, Etsy resolves such cases by reimbursing the buyer from their own account.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

    Any business is a risk. But a professional seller differs in that they manage risks, not fear them. Etsy’s protection program is one of the tools that helps build a more confident business. Although, unfortunately, this tool has some limitations.\u200d<\/p>

    • Is there real seller protection on Etsy and when does the platform refund money instead of you?<\/strong>
      Yes, there is a seller protection program on Etsy. But it doesn’t always work and not for all orders. If the order meets the conditions \u2014 tracking is provided, the cost does not exceed the limit \u2014 and something goes wrong, Etsy can refund the buyer from its account. The seller does not lose anything in this case.<\/li>
    • What situations does this program cover?<\/strong>
      Protection covers several cases: the shipment does not arrive, arrives damaged, is delayed, or the buyer claims the item does not match the description. But only if the seller has fulfilled all platform requirements \u2014 otherwise, the responsibility remains with them.<\/li>
